Covering Hate Speech: A Guide for Journalists is a new publication of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Its author, Cherian George (Hong Kong Baptist University), will present key takeaways. Although most take hate speech is a problem that is high on their agenda, media have generally failed to respond adequately to this challenge. George argues that part of the reason is a tendency to fixate on individual instances of norm-violating speech - such as a politician's remark, a celebrity's social media post, or an offensive cartoon - instead of as long-running, multi-actor propaganda campaigns. The Guide offers practical suggestions for media.

Respondent: Stewart M Hoover, founding director of the Center for Media, Religion and Culture, University of Colorado Boulder.
