Feel free to contact me at katya.ognyanova@rutgers.edu with questions about this early-career data collection opportunity.

    CHIP50 Early Career Investigator Competition

The Civic Health and Institutions Project, a 50 States Survey (CHIP50) is an NSF-funded initiative. Investigators propose surveys to be fielded on samples from all or a large number of states, or very large national samples. See chip50.org for more information.

In an effort to enable early-stage scholars to field large-scale studies, we are pleased to announce a Special Competition for Early Career Investigators. Winning projects will be allowed to field surveys that include 2 to 3 more items than a regular CHIP50 study. While anyone can submit a proposal via the regular CHIP50 mechanism, this Special Competition is limited to investigators who are either graduate students or no more than 3 years post-PhD / post-residency for MDs (i.e., PhD must be received, or MD-residency completed in 2021 or after).

We will begin accepting proposals for the Special Competition on February 5, 2024, and the deadline is March 1, 2024.  Applicants should include "Early Career Investigator Competition" in the project's title and identify the proposal as such when asked on the submission form.

Please access chip50.org to see the types of studies available (state-based or large sample), how to count "items," sample sizes available, and how to submit.

With that in mind, below are the item/sample size details for the special competition. If you have any questions, please contact: CHIP50StatesSurvey@gmail.com. Proposals can be submitted at bit.ly/chip50-apply.

    ·        State-based proposals.

o   An "all state" proposal can include 12 items (instead of 10 items in regular studies). This includes the "long form" and "short form" states (i.e., all states and D.C.).

o   A "long form" state proposal can include 15 items (instead of 12 items in regular studies). This includes the 35 long form states.

o   A proposal with a smaller set of states can include up to 15 items (instead of the 13 items in regular studies), depending on the states. An applicant proposing a subset of states (or a single state) should contact CHIP50 before applying. The specific states should be stated in the proposal (the initial submission form does not ask for the specific states).

    ·        Large sample proposals.

o   A 5,000-size sample can include 16 items (instead of 14 items in regular studies).

o   A 7,500-size sample can include 15 items (instead of 12 items in regular studies).

o   A 15,000-25,000-size sample can include 13 items (instead of 10 items in regular studies).
