The International Communication Association is pleased to announce the incoming editorial team for the Journal of Communication: Dani Madrid-Morales (University of Sheffield, United Kingdom), Julia Sonnevend (The New School, United States), Herman Wasserman (Stellenbosch University, South Africa), Sung-Un Yang (Boston University, United States), and Weiyu Zhang (National University of Singapore, Singapore), who will begin their four-year term in September 2026.
The editors are seeking to appoint Associate Editors for an initial two-year term, beginning with the start of their editorship, with the possibility of renewal. Self-nominations are encouraged.
The Journal of Communication is a general forum for communication scholarship and publishes articles and book reviews on a broad range of issues in communication theory and research. The declared mission of the incoming editors is to represent the entire discipline and to do so in a manner that respects the variety of epistemological and methodological approaches found within the discipline of communication. Accordingly, JoC will publish the best available scholarship on all aspects of communication and welcomes all manuscripts that are conceptually meaningful, methodologically sound, interesting, clearly written, and thoughtfully argued, irrespective of methodological and theoretical approaches.
The goal is to appoint a group of associate editors that will complement the strengths and expertise of the editors. In particular, we are looking for associate editors that represent the following ICA divisions and interest groups: Children, Adolescents & Media; Game Studies; Communication Law & Policy; Interpersonal Communication; Intergroup Communication; LGBTQ Studies; Language & Social Interaction. Expertise that combines one or more of these areas is an advantage. Applicants with other areas of specialization are also very welcome to apply!
Each associate editor will be expected to handle manuscripts under their expertise areas. To mentor the associate editors to become future editors, our policy will be for the associate editors to select the reviewers, make the decision regarding the status of the manuscript, and write action letters.
A complete nomination package includes a mission statement for the associate editorship; the candidate's curriculum vitae; and contact information of three references familiar with the candidate's work, experience, and suitability for the task of journal editing. Please submit the information through this Microsoft Form link: Call for Nominations: Associate Editors for Journal of Communication (2026-2028) – Fill out form
Generally, applicants should be established in the respective area/s (early career scholars may be considered in exceptional cases) and have a record of academic excellence corresponding to their academic career level.
Applications will close on 10 August 2026.
