A postgraduate research scholarship of up to $A38,606 p.a. for a PhD in the School of Art Communication and English at The University of Sydney, to study The Value of News and the Future of Australian Journalism.
This scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to PhD student who is undertaking research in policies and strategies to address the future sustainability of news media and journalism.
The project starts from the premise that before we ask questions about who should pay for producing news – consumers, advertisers, governments, digital platforms etc. – there is an analytically prior question of what is the value of news. Questions of value relate not only to consumer preferences (individual value) and costs of producing news, but to the institutional reputation of news brands, work practices of news organisations, and what is deemed socially important (social value).
This scholarship is funded by Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project (Valuing News: Aligning Individual, Institutional and Societal Perspectives) and the School of Art Communication and English.
The scholarship is open to international applicants, but must be undertaken in Australia. The closing date is 10 Feb 2023, with an expected July 2023 commencement. More information can be found here. You can also contact terry.flew@sydney.edu.au for further details.
