Northeastern University's College of Arts, Media, and Design invites applications for a fully funded PhD scholarship in Interdisciplinary Design and Media to join the Research Center for Communication, Media Innovation and Social Change. The prospective student's research interests should be at the intersection of networked urban mobilities and mobile communication, with a particular focus on understanding how marginalized communities creatively appropriate media technologies. Preference will be given to candidates with a background that combines critical/cultural studies, qualitative methods, design/media arts, mobile games and/or information visualization.

For the first two years of the program, students will have a 20-hour/week graduate research assistantship in which they will have the opportunity to engage in a range of research projects, including:

    • understanding how marginalized communities creatively engage with networked technologies, and mapping/visualizing how these creative practices occur around the Globe.

    • developing a mobile gaming database of historic mobile games and artifacts to aid researchers in games studies.

    • producing a media art show on the history of mobile communication and mobile games.

    • investigating networked urban mobilities in Global South spaces as they relate to mobility justice and social inclusion.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to engage with an interdisciplinary group of faculty in areas such as Communication, Art + Design, Architecture, and Journalism. Applied outputs of the research might include immersive audiovisual  experiences, locative media and augmented reality projects, site specific media art installations in public spaces, along with a written dissertation synthesizing learnings from applied project(s).

The successful candidate should have strong writing, collaboration, and interpersonal communication skills. An MS in Communication or a related field is preferred but not required.

Applications are due December 1, 2024. For more information, please contact Dr. Adriana de Souza e Silva at a.desouzaesilva@northeastern.edu
