    The International Communication Association relies on the expertise and passion of its membership. In addition to enjoying exclusive benefits such as discounted conference rates, ICA members derive gratification from contributing to the association's success through service on committees and task forces. This collaboration with scholars from all around the world is both intellectually challenging and rewarding.

    ICA committees have rotating memberships with staggered terms to maximize institutional memory and stability. Each year, a small number of openings become available. If you are interested in getting involved with ICA outside of your specific division or interest group, please complete the form to express your interest!

    How can serving ICA serve me? Top five reasons you should get involved:

    1. BOOST YOUR CAREER: Particularly for early-career scholars, association service is an excellent way to elevate your CV. It helps you promote yourself with a positive impression, develop creativity and innovation skill sets, and becomes a forum to apply your strengths. You will contribute to the charge, problem solve as needed, and deal with a mix of personalities with varied career experience levels from diverse areas of academic focus. This all adds up and helps to improve your teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and interpersonal skills, all of which are skills you will use in the university faculty setting as well.

    2. MAKE AN IMPACT: Service to ICA gives you the chance to shape the kind of community with which you wish to be align yourself. It gives you the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than yourself and collaborate with other scholars across the globe. Through service, you make a commitment to ICA. Members of the ICA committees and task forces volunteer time and effort to support ICA and move its work forward. The accomplished growth of ICA is a direct result of the dedication to the association and commitment to excellence made by committee and task force members.     3. GIVE BACK TO AN ORGANIZATION YOU BELIEVE IN: Our members are passionate about ICA; service on a committee or task force is the ultimate show of support! 

    4. FORM A CONNECTION: Service to ICA further connects you with other ICA members with whom you might otherwise not cross paths. It gives you the chance to form real relationships that can have a lasting impact on your life. You could connect with a future research collaborator, have a conversation that sparks a substantive change in your research, or even meet your new best friend!

    5. BECOME PART OF THE ICA LEADERSHIP COMMUNITY: Service to a particular committee or task force helps drive that specific piece of a greater strategic plan for the Association. Becoming part of a committee or task force helps get you on the radar of and build connections with ICA Leadership. ICA committee and task force members often advance to other leadership roles within the organization. If you're ambitious to move up within the leadership, volunteering for a committee or task force is the place to start.

    ANNUAL DEADLINE: 12:00 Noon ICA Headquarters Time on 15 January

    EXPRESSION OF INTEREST (EoI) PERIOD: ICA will accept Expressions of Interest for a four-month period annually: opening by 15 September and closing at 12:00 Noon ICA Headquarters Time on 15 January (for service to begin in June if appointed). 

    ELIGIBILITY: Only current members shall be eligible for appointment to a committee or task force. (Note: ICA's annual membership term runs 1 October to 30 September) 

    TO APPLY: Members interested in serving on a committee should complete the Expression of Interest (EoI) form at the bottom of this page.  

    ICA COMMITTEE AND TASK FORCE LIST: View a description of ICA Committees and Task Forces.  

    VACANCIES: ICA committee and task-force vacancies vary. Not every committee has a vacancy every year. Task forces are established and populated by the President on an ad-hoc basis. Vacancies sometime occur off-schedule when members are unable to serve their full term.

    TERM LENGTH: ICA committee members serve generally a three-year term.  Task-force terms are generally from establishment until either (a) the work of the task force is complete or (b) the task force transitions into a standing committee. 

    APPOINTMENT PROCESS: Completing the form below allows members merely to express interest in serving ICA, and does not guarantee appointment to a committee or task force. ICA committee vacancies are populated annually by the incoming President of any given year pending approval by the Board of Directors. By submitting an EoI, you could be selected for any committee or task force that has a vacancy (vacancies vary; see above).  You may indicate preferred committees in your responses, however you are not able to choose a specific committee to be appointed to; there is a field to indicate any your are unwilling to serve on. 

     Following is the general timeline of the process: 

    • Mid-September: The annual EoI period opens by 15 September
    • 15 January: The annual EoI period closes
    • February: ICA Director of Governance & Member Services compiles a list of upcoming committee vacancies to review with the current President-Elect (the incoming President in May)  
    • Late February/Early March: ICA Director of Governance & Member Services forwards EoI forms to the President-Elect for consideration
    • March: The President-Elect constitutes a list of candidates for each vacancy, giving priority to the intellectual, geographic, and demographic diversification of the committee
    • April: The President-Elect submits the slate of candidates in a formal motion for approval during the annual Board of Directors' meeting
    • May/June: ICA Board of Directors votes on the committee slate during the annual meeting
    • Late June/July: Once approved, the Director of Governance & Member Services emails the Chair of each committee, copying the members, with the charge of the committee and approved committee member composition with term end dates  

     

    NOTIFICATIONS: If you are selected for a committee or task force, you will be copied on the aforementioned correspondence to the chair with committee composition.  If you are notselected for a committee or task force, you will be notified via email by 31July by Julie Arnold.
