ICA 2025 #Preconference - Artificial Intelligence in Journalism from a Global Perspective: Past, Present, and Future
Over the past two decades, there has been a notable shift towards automation and data-driven news production processes in many countries worldwide, partially supported by artificial intelligence (AI). Given the rapid and far-reaching changes AI drives in journalism, there is an urgent need tounderstand its past, present, and future implications.
This preconference focuses on bringing together scholars working on understanding and studying AI- and algorithm-based technologies concerning journalism to a) provide an opportunity for discussing the past, present, and future of the complex relationship between technologies and journalism from various perspectives and to b) address the specific uses of (generative) AI in countries from the Global South and Asia, which have sometimes been late adopters of such technologies.
Submissions may focus on-but are not limited to-the following themes and perspectives:
- Historical trends in AI adoption in journalism
- Comparative analyses of AI use in journalism across different regions or countries
- The future of AI in shaping global journalism practices
- The role of automation and machine learning in contemporary newsrooms
- Generative AI and its impact on content creation and distribution
- Ethical considerations in AI-driven journalism
- The evolution of journalistic roles and skills in the AI age
- AI's influence on public service media and local journalism
