Kevin Coe (University of Utah) and Diana Zulli (Purdue University) are seeking chapters for Teaching Political Communication, forthcoming in the Elgar Guides to Teaching series. The volume will bring together a wide array of perspectives and approaches to help those who teach political communication (and related college-level courses) navigate the myriad changes and challenges of the contemporary moment.

Amid rapid technological transformations, an increasingly fragmented media environment, dramatic changes to institutions of higher education, democratic backsliding, and rising political extremism, teachers of political communication face challenges but also opportunities. Never has the thoughtful, honest, and ethical teaching of political communication been more necessary than it is today. The chapters in this volume will grapple with both the broader contexts within which political communication is now taught and the on-the-ground realities that these contexts engender. They will offer crucial reflections, insights, and approaches to help all of us who are invested in teaching political communication do it to the best of our abilities.

Each brief chapter (3,500-5,000 words, inclusive of notes/references using APA style) will offer a perspective on teaching political communication, broadly defined. The focus and format of the chapters will be up to the authors, but some possibilities include: successful approaches used in teaching political communication, descriptions of strategies and/or assignments, techniques for adapting to changing modalities and populations, navigating tensions/challenges in the classroom, etc. Contributions that focus on contexts beyond the United States are especially welcome.

Potential contributors should send a proposed title, abstract of no more than 500 words (exclusive of notes/references), and CV for each author to kevin.coe@utah.edu and dzulli@purdue.edu by October 1, 2024; contributors will be notified of acceptance by November 1. Full chapter drafts will be due March 1, 2025, with book publication expected in late 2025 or early 2026. Please reach out to the editors with any questions.
